Motif and properties of the gold coin

The gold eagle shows the eponymous eagle on the value side. It holds an olive branch in its claws. With wings wide open, he is just returning to his eyrie where the mother is already waiting for her eaglet. In addition, the well-known sayings E Pluribus Unum ("From many one"; the emblem of the Great Seal of the United States) and In God We Trust ("We trust in God"; the motto of the USA) can be seen, you may be familar with from the dollar bills & coins. The design comes from Miley Busiek. It will soon be replaced by a new motif.

The legend shows the fine weight (1 oz) and the face value (50 dollars). The issuing country United States of America is also stamped - just another indication that these gold coins were legitimized by the US Congress. The purity of the coin is 916.66 gold, i.e. 22 carats (Note: With the Buffalo, the US Mint also issues an investment coin in 9999 gold, which is not so well known internationally).

Freedom personified is depicted on the back. The Lady Liberty walks with flowing robes over a hill, at the foot of which the Capitol in Washington is sketched. She holds a torch in her left hand and an olive branch in her right. The rays of the rising sun can be seen in the background. A wreath of stars symbolizes the federal states (as on the US flag).

History of the American Gold Eagle

The origins of the Gold Eagle go back to 1904. At that time, President Theodore Roosevelt wanted to beautify the American currency and commissioned the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens with the design. A design in high relief was desired, which should be reminiscent of ancient Greek and Roman coins. The result was the famous Double-Eagle, which was minted from 1907 to 1933 and is nowadays probably the most famous (and most sought-after) gold coin of all. The term eagle did not arise from the motif. Rather, it is a coinage defined by the US Congress - similar to the pound or the original mark.

In 1986 this historical and meaningful motive was taken up again in order to offer the population an easy way to invest in gold again. In the so-called Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, the US Congress authorized the minting of the American Gold Eagle.

The fineness was set at 22 carats (.9167 fine gold). In fact, it was a refinement, because since 1837 coins in the USA have only been minted with a purity of .900. Particularly interesting: In the Coin Act it was stipulated that only gold and copper may be used for production, which was mined in the USA.

While the original motif of the Double Eagle was adopted, it was decided to adapt the value side. In particular, the face value was increased from $ 20 to $ 50. Nevertheless, it is no longer acurrency moneys. Unlike the original, the material value clearly exceeds the nominal value. Nonetheless, it is an indication that the US government guarantees the purity and quality of the coins.
