Motif and characteristics of the silver coin

The Libertadt has been minted by the Casa de Moneda de Mexico since 1996 in the denomination of 5 ounces. The motif of the Libertad silver coins goes back to the Monumento a la Independencia (Independence Angel) in the heart of Mexico City. The "goddess of victory" is shown as a dynamic three-quarter profile. The famous statue also gave the coin its name: Libertad (freedom). The two volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl can be seen in the background.

The Spanish legend shows the fine weight (1 ounce) and the fineness (.999 silver). The back shows the current Mexican coat of arms in the middle, which refers to the azectic founding myth. It is a golden eagle sitting on a cactus and eating a rattlesnake. The words Estados Unidos Mexicanos ("United States of Mexio") can be read around the coat of arms. In addition, 10 older versions of the same coat of arms are grouped as a circle around the current version. Up until the 1999 vintage there was only a coat of arms surrounded by a jagged wreath.

The Libertad is the legal tender. However, like the Krugerrand or Maria Theresien Taler, it has no official face value.
