The sovereign is an English gold coin that was introduced in 1489 by King Henry VII (1458-1509) worth one pound of silver coins (equivalent to 20 shillings). The gold sovereign has been minted with an identical fine weight of 7.32 grams since 1817.

The year of the first edition of the standardized, "modern" Sovereign in gold, minted by the Royal Mint, was 1957 (22 carat / 91.66% gold content). Due to the addition of harder admixture metals, the Gold Sovereign is extremely robust against wear and tear. The gold coin is recognized far beyond the coast of Great Britain and is a symbol of quality, reliability and continuity.
