Motif and characteristics of the 10 ounce silver emu
The 2024 Australia 10 Oz Piedfort 'Next Generation Series' Silver Emu coin portrays an image of an Emu and its 3 babies. The artist's abbreviation and the mint mark ("P125" for Perth Mint) can also be seen here.
Created by artist Daniel Thorne, the obverse design of the 2024 10 oz Silver Emu Piedfort Coin depicts a new portrait of His Majesty. Charles III shown in left-profile relief wearing a suit and without a crown on his head. The official face value of 10 Australian dollars, the year (2024), the fine weight (10 ounces) and the fineness (9999 silver; abbreviated with the chemical symbol Ag) are embossed here.
Explanation of terms: A piedfort (French: pied fort - ‚strong foot ') is a coin with usually twice the material thickness (and thus twice the weight) compared to normal coinage. It is derived from the words "pied de monnaie", which historically denotes the number of coins that were struck from a unit of weight of precious metal. E.g. ~ 16 silver coins of two ounces each from one kilo.
