At the beginning of the 19th century, President Theodore Roosevelt advocated a new coin that was less subject to wear and tear. The result was the so-called "Incuse Indian Head" which was minted between 1908 and 1929 as a 2 1/2 and 5 US dollar coin. In contrast to almost all of its predecessor coins, it had an "incuse" design - similar to that of antique seals or gemstone pegs. This minting process meant that the coins in circulation were exposed to far less abrasion and damage than raised motifs.
