The Black Bull of Clarence is associated with the rise of the House of York during the fifteenth century. It was adopted as a heraldic symbol by Edward IV, the first Yorkist king and a key protagonist in the Wars of the Roses. The bull first appeared on the Royal Arms during the reign of Elizabeth I, when she ordered the recoinage of all silver coins.
Following the success of previous coins featuring the Black Bull of Clarence, this silver ten-ounce edition features the same original design by Jody Clark that captures the power and might of this earthy English beast.
This bullion coin from The Queen’s Beasts Collection is also available as a platinum one ounce edition, a gold one ounce and quarter- ounce edition and a silver two-ounce edition.
The background for this range comes from the coronation of Her Majesty The Queen, where ten heraldic beasts stood guard, The Queen’s Beasts, sculpted by James Woodford RA for the coronation ceremony.
This is the fifth in a series of ten designs that will celebrate each of The Queen’s Beasts.
