Motif and characteristics of the silver coin

There is a gigantic monument in the middle of Mexico City. El Ángel de la Independencia is very similar to the Berlin Victory Column and was built in 1910 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Beginning of Mexican Wars of Independence. At the top of the imposing column is a golden statue of the goddess Nike. The Greek goddess of victory was chosen as the motif for the first modern bullion coin in silver in 1982. The Casa de Moneda de Mexico took up the motif of the much older Centenario gold coins, which were minted from 1921 (until 1931; and were resumed in 1943-1972).

However, it was decided to use a much more plastic and dynamic design. While the first Libertad silver coins still showed the goddess of victory frontally,they switched to a three-quarter view of the bare-breasted goddess in 1996. In the background you can see the Popocatépetl and the Iztaccihuatl. The prominent volcanoes are deeply anchored in Aztec mythology and symbolize the Mexicans' great attachment to their past.

Above it, the fine weight (1 ounce), the material (fine silver; Plata Pura), the year, and the fineness (.999 silver) are shown in Spanish. The mint mark (oM) of the Casa de Moneda can be seen next to it.

The coat of arms of the United Mexican States is depicted on the back of the Silver Libertad. It shows an eagle perched on a cactus. It holds a snake in its claws. The coat of arms goes back to the Aztec founding myth. The legend reads ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS. The coat of arms is surrounded by a wreath from older versions. It appeared in the famous Codex Mendoza of 1525 and was later modified again and again. Until the 1999 vintage, only the current state coat of arms was shown here in large, surrounded by a jagged disease.
