Motif and properties of the gold coin
The Austrian Philharmonic was designed by the chief engraver of the Austrian Mint, Thomas Pesendorfer, gold coin and is issued annually with the same motif. On the gold side of the Philharmonic you can see the famous organ from the golden hall of the Vienna Musikverein. The fine weight (1 ounce), the fineness (999.9 gold), the year and the nominal value (100 euros) are stamped underneath. Above it is emblazoned the issuing country "Republic of Austria".
On the motif side of the popular gold coin there are selected instruments from the Vienna Philharmonic to represent the orchestra that gives it its name: in the background a harp, a fagot and a horn. A cello in the foreground, two violas to the right and two violins to the left. The name of the coin can also be seen here.
History of the Austrian Philharmonic
Europe's leading gold coin has been minted in the 1 ounce denomination since 1989. With the introduction of the euro in 2002, the face value changed from schilling to euro. This made the “Philharmonic” the first investment coin to be minted with a face value in euros. The same motif was issued in silver from February 2008, but in 2016 the Vienna Philharmonic will also be available in platinum.
In the early years the "Phili", as it is affectionately known by fans, was only available in 1 ounce and 1/4 ounce denominations. The smaller versions 1/10 and 1/25 ounce did not come onto the market until the 25th anniversary in 2014. This year a special proof edition was also issued.
Big Phil in particular received a lot of attention in the press. The 1000-ounce version was issued for the 15th anniversary. At the time, this was the largest gold coin ever issued. The diameter of the special coinage, limited to 15 pieces, is a proud 36cm.
A special size was also issued for the 20th anniversary. The 20-ounce Philharmonic was issued in 2009 with an edition of 6027 pieces.
In the course of its history, the gold coin has received several awards. Several times it has been named the best-selling gold coin in the world by the famous World Gold Council (1992, 1995, 1996 and 2000). At times the market share in Europe was over 40 percent.
